About Acupuncture

Rooted in over 2,000 years of theory and clinical experience, acupuncture removes blockages in energy and redirects the flow to promote balance and support overcoming disease states.

Traditional acupuncture places fine needles along specific areas (energy meridians). For example: one of the best acupuncture points for headaches is on the foot. A more Western approach of Acupuncture is to localize needle placement around specific muscle groups and areas. For example, placing needles around the head and neck to address tight muscles in a tension headache.

Blending these approaches allows our Certified Acupuncturists to build the most effective treatment plan for your concerns. Our treatments can include electrostimulation or points, cupping and/or heat.

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medical ideology, and encompasses the use of sterile fine needles inserted at specific points of the body to stimulate different aspects of a patient’s vital energy (Qi) to aid in the healing journey.

FAQs

  • The greatest number of pain sensor nerves are on the outermost layers of the skin. Sometimes the initial moments of needle insertion can be felt. Once the needle is in place, some patients report a pulsing sensation or dull ache.

  • Initial sessions involve an intake that is tailored towards Traditional Chinese Medicine practices, a tongue and pulse assessment.

Acupuncture needles are left in for approximately 20-30 minutes to optimize the flow of qi without overstimulating the areas.

  • Because treatments are individualized, treatment frequency will vary. Normally, we recommend treatments more often during acute cases, and less frequently during a maintenance phase

Each follow up appointment updates your point protocol based on your individual progress and symptoms.

  • Lose, comfortable clothing. The majority of therapeutic points can be done below the elbows and knees. In cases of abdominal and reproductive concerns, access to the abdomen will be valuable. In cases of headaches and back pain, access to the back is important. We have massage table sheets and gowns if needed.

  • Acupuncture not only helps to balance overall hormones in both men and women, but improves ovarian function and sperm quality.  Acupuncture reduces inflammation, a key factor in follicular maturation, ovulation and implantation. Studies have found including acupuncture increases anti-inflammatory compounds, and decreases inflammatory compounds.

All stages of fertility and conception are supported by acupuncture. Through increased ovarian & uterine blood flow, decreased uterine motility and mood support related to fertility struggles, acupuncture is able to address the whole picture.  Through hormone balancing and organ system support, acupuncture is a very supportive treatment to improve implantation rate and clinical pregnancy rate.

We recommend acupuncture as a complementary therapy to my patients while addressing other foundational aspects of fertility (nutrition, sleep, stress, energy, menstrual cycles, etc.). Weekly or biweekly acupuncture sessions starting 2-3 months before conception, IUI or IVF transfer are the most effective to support clinical pregnancy rates, live birth rates and lowered states of anxiety.
